Description
A charming pair of small English porcelain plaques of topographical views of ‘Epsom, Surrey’ and of ‘Durdans House, Near Epsom, the seat of Blackman Esq.’ The first plaque of Durdans House, in 1816, was the seat of Sir George Blackman. Sir George bought Durdans House in 1799 and sold it to Sir Gilbert Heathcote in 1819. This plaque is from a painting by John Hassell in 1816.
It shows the house and lands. The second plaque shows Epsom High Street with the clock tower, a carriage and a pub sign with some figures in the foreground. This is named simply as ‘Epsom, Surrey.’ Both plaques have a reference number painted on the reverse ‘N.31’ and ‘N.29’. They are held within gilt bronze frames. They measure 10.5cm x 8cm.
