George Kilburne was an English genre painter specialising in figures and scenes from life. Kilburne was born in Norfolk, the eldest of three children. He started out as an engraver which served him well, allowing him to develop the detail which would enhance his paintings. He soon found his place in the art world. In 1866 he was elected a member of the New Watercolour Society and he became a member of the Royal Miniature Society in 1898. In London Kilburne exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. This painting is framed in a giltwood swept frame.
