Description
An Austrian pottery 19th century bust of St John the Baptist after the marble original by Antonio Rossellino (1427-1479). The bust measures 34cm high x 29cm wide at the base. It is in good condition, however, there is a firing fault at the back of the head in the form of an indentation which when displayed is not seen.
Rossellino was a most accomplished sculptor. This bust shows St John close to adolescence. He has waving curls and it suggests a the beauty of a young god. This particular piece is Austrian and it has an impressed mark A 368 on the reverse together with a small label.
